ArtLab is back for a second series of workshops for the Spring Term at Heatherleys. Designed to help you think like an artist and push your creative boundaries, Art Lab is not your average life drawing class. ‘London Drawing’ tutors, Anne Noble-Partridge and David Price, will guide students through a wide range of explorative techniques and help you look at life from a new perspective. Suitable for all levels of experience, and all materials are provided.

Anne says ‘We are really excited about the return of ArtLab to Heatherleys. This is such a great opportunity for us and for participants to have the space and the time to really explore the possibilities of drawing from life. Through these sessions we aim to create an environment combining traditional life-drawing practices with experimental drawing ideas an mediums’.

Heatherleys Principal, John Walton RP, is launching a series of tutors’ exhibitions at the school with a display of a selection of his own works. Featuring portraits of his immediate family, he says that the paintings of his children when they were small are ‘unashamedly romantic’.

Stretching back over a 45 year period he has included a self portrait of himself at the age of 40 and another at the age 75.

Graeme Messer is the winner of this year’s Mr Heatherley’s three-figure composition prize.

He said “It was such a great honour to have won the Mr Heatherley prize for 2011, being singled out from a group of such gifted and talented students. I drew my inspiration for the painting from Durer’s incredibly honest nude self-portrait, and from Eadwaeard Muybridge’s wrestling images. My aim was to create a self-portrait that not only depicted my physical reality, but that allowed the viewer to enter into my emotional and psychological worlds as well.”

The prize was established by Principal John Walton, based on his own experience of entering the Slade’s composition competition as a student in the 1940s.

Melanie Roseveare developed an interest in making and using ceramic transfers after seeing Grayson Perry’s work in the 2004 Turner Prize Show. She began incorporating the technique to decorate her own pottery works and later started to experiment with re-firing onto found objects.

Encouraged by her tutor at Heatherley’s, Claire Ireland, she launched ‘Melody Rose’ earlier this year. She has been approached by Culture Label to sell her work, the online shop for galleries including the V&A, the Tate and the Saatchi Gallery.

Melanie says ‘ My practice involves redesigning and re-using unloved pieces of ceramics which have long since fallen out of fashion and reinventing them for modern tastes. It combines my passion for antique and vintage with my desire to create functional works of art. Each piece has its individual history and is re-fired in the kiln to breathe new life into it’.

Heatherleys runs the only Portrait Painting Diploma in the UK.  The course was originally conceived by BP Portrait Award winner, Daphne Todd OBE, in 1992,   and has been run by Susan Engledow ever since.

The aim is to prepare students for professional practice as portrait and figurative painters. The emphasis is on the practical application of techniques, and always based on observation from life. Most of the work is produced in oils, but drawing, printmaking and sculpture are also integral elements of study.

Tutors and assessors include several members of The Royal Society of Portrait Painters including Andy James, Melissa Scott Miller, John Walton and Jane Bond. Students frequently go on to exhibit at the RP annual show and at The National Portrait Gallery BP Portrait Award exhibition.

A limited number of places on the course are available for this September.

Heatherleys is launching a brand new series of exciting Saturday workshops for the Autumn term in collaboration with London Drawing.

Anne Noble-Partridge of London Drawing says ‘ During these creative life-drawing workshops you will be encouraged to lose your inhibitions through a wide range of practices and materials. You will be asked to confront your own ambitions within your artistic practice and to consider how to make your work relevant to yourself and to comtemporary artistic practices in the wider sense.

We will not teach you ‘how to draw’ but rather aim to enable you to fully engage and realise your own creative potential, build up confidence in your own artistic identity and think like an artist’

London Drawing have worked with some of the capital’s most famous and inspiring venues, including the Tate Modern, The V&A, The Barbican Gallery and Central St.Martins. Heatherleys is proud to introduce this latest project.
