Bowler Hat by Paul Gildea

Paul Gildea has won the David Messum Prize at this year’s New English Art Club exhibition.

The painting is of three of his children, one of them lifting up a bowler hat. He says ‘Lift the glass to release the spider, hair held up like spider’s legs. It is a nonsense scene painted in an old-fashioned way – to imitate natural light but with a fierce orange background’.

It can be viewed at the Mall Galleries until Sunday the 9th December.
