Rebecca Hathaway, one of our 2nd year Portrait Diploma students, successfully made it through to the first round of the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year Award earlier this year.
She says ‘ I entered the competition with a self-portrait I’d painted in Chris Moock’s class, after hearing about the Award from Kathleen Soriano when she visited the school.
The day itself was a fascinating get together of very different people and styles. I painted Jilly Cooper, who then went on to choose my painting of her. She was lovely, and a great sitter. She had had her portrait painted by John Bratby in the past, so she knew what to expect.
I then went back to Sky in the summer to paint another self portrait which they used in the promotion of the series (along with a few others) in a time-lapse sequence – the day’s painting reduced to 7 seconds. This was another fantastic experience.
I have watched most of the current series and I have to say I was impressed by the diversity and approaches and the range of learning paths that the participants have taken’.
Rebecca’s episode will be on Sky Arts tomorrow at 7.30pm. http://www.sky.com/tv/channel/skyarts/listings#programme-0
