Hilary’s Printmaking Students meet Norman Ackroyd R.A.

Hilary Daltry has taken her printmaking students on a couple of interesting field-trips this Autumn. Firstly to the V&A Prints and Drawing Department and secondly to meet her friend, and former tutor, Norman Ackroyd. She said of the experience:

‘During my Friday printmaking programme I always encourage students to look at prints first hand. We went to the V&A Prints and Drawing department where you can view original prints by artists such as Picasso, Hokusai and Munch. The class were able to draw the prints in situ and also take inspiration from seeing the detail up close in the flesh. On this occasion we were studying a series of 36 animal prints illustrating Buffons Histoire Naturelle by Picasso using the sugarlift technique we have been experimenting with and learning in class!

Our second visit was to Norman Ackroyd’s studio. He was able to show us the very recipe that Picasso had used. This gave us great insight into the way Ackroyd works on his own landscape etchings, using aquatint as a starting point. It was fascinating for the students who have learned so much from watching the artist in his own working environment.

Anyone who is interested in enrolling for a printmaking class in the Spring Term can choose from Monday evenings offering etching, mono-printing and lithography, an advanced class on Thursday daytimes that includes screen-printing, Friday daytimes focusing on etching, mono-printing and relief-printing, or the Saturday drop in class. We have something for everyone, from the beginner to those with more experience. ‘

A Reception in Honour of John Walton

A reception was held this week at Painter’s Hall in honour of our retiring Principal, John Walton. After 39 years and 39 days at the helm John has handed Heatherley’s over to Robin-Lee Hall. The event was attended by our trustees, teaching staff and members of the Painter-Stainers company. Daphne Todd OBE gave a moving speech that echoed the debt that many of us owe John for all his hard work and dedication to the school.

Our new Principal Robin-Lee Hall oversaw the event alongside Vice-Principal and Head of Sculpture Veronica Ricks.

Work on display included paintings by Robert Dukes, a recent addition to the Heatherley teaching staff.  We were also pleased to see an old friend of Heatherleys, Ken Howard.

George Levantis at the 9th Bienal do Mercosul, Brazil

2Interested by the study of Sal, an island in Cape Verde named for its salt deposits, George Levantis has devoted much of his time recently to exploring salt as a material for his work.  In the 1970’s Levantis used acrylic paint mixed with salt water in his work during his long sea journeys with the Ocean Fleet shipping company.

Out of his collaboration with Ocean Fleet he made the installation Pieces of Sea Fall Through the Stars in 1976. It was a response to the environment that Levantis encountered on the open sea with the heightened significance of the cycle of day and night, assembled as a three-dimensional tactile diagram. Shown only a few times it represents the boat’s confined space as a space of isolation.  The artist still conserves the bamboo rods he originally used, bought in Kyoto and stored in a sailor’s trunk.  For the 9th Bienal Levantis carried out a complete reconstruction of the piece with original materials and others he collected in Brazil.
